Oceansong

By Kim Taylor, age 12

The ocean.
A vast expanse of water, embracing the world.
The ocean.
A world in harmony.
The ocean.
Beauty indescribable.
The ocean.
But not forevermore.

One day I ventured out, to see the ocean blue,
When I stepped out of the car, above me pelicans flew.
I stood upon a rocky bluff, looking at the beach,
I smelled the salty air, and watched the dolphins breach.
My home.
But not forevermore.

I climbed down the rocky bluff, and onto soft white sand,
The waves crashed down onto the beach, where water met the land.
I raced into the water, and waded in the tide,
It was then I noticed something wrong; a turtle on its side.
It was strangled by a plastic bag.
Gone forevermore.

I looked carfully around myself, and saw so much much more.
Cans and paper, shoes and food, a disaster on the shore.
The seagulls cried out overhead, the crabs ran head and heel,
The whales were singing mournful songs, the way the oceans feel.
A tainted world.
But not forevermore.

I found some people on the beach, that saw the things I'd seen
Together then, we cleaned it up, and felt the world sing.
This beach was now free of its curse, one that plagues the world,
We must try and free the earth, and let nature unfurl.
Break the curse.
Stop it forevermore.

The sun was set and then I climbed up on the bluff again.
Then veiwed the way the beach had changed, before I went away.
A turtle climbed onto the beach, to go and lay her eggs,
The fish and crabs returned to say, and otter streached its legs.
I left the beach.
But not forevermore.
