CLASS DESCRIPTION: (section 1)
Minecraft Math is a chance for children to explore mathematical concepts in the three dimensional world of Minecraft. Each class will be split between our online video classroom and a Minecraft server. The Minecraft Math server will also be accessible to students between classes for working on homework, playing with their classmates and exploring other optional math challenges.
The first part of the course will focus on an introduction to algebra and balancing equations. The second part of the course will be an intro to graph theory, first through exploring networks of Minecraft lakes and islands, and then through looking at how the conversations of network non-player characters are created. In the third part of the course we will be working on advanced clone and fill techniques. This will give students additional practice using the coordinate system of Minecraft. Finally, we will be working on redstone and building a binary adding machine.
There will be weekly practice activities sent the day after class for students to practice the material or prepare for next class, so please budget an hour or two per week for homework and practice. The practice activities will lay the groundwork for the three assignments.
Students will need to be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide. They will need to know how to add and subtract negative numbers.
Students will be expected to have basic familiarity with Minecraft including familiarity with using the teleport, clone and fill commands. These commands will be integral to the class, so students who are newer to using these commands will be asked to attend two extra practice sessions.
Typing skills are highly recommended for this class, although this can be worked around with parental involvement.
Students will be required to have Minecraft for PC/MAC. They will also be asked to purchase the Betonquest Editor. (https://github.com/Co0sh/BetonQuest-Editor)
