Meet GHFO Instructor Cyd Smith

Cyd SmithHi. I’m Cyd and I will be teaching the introduction to Web Design course for Gifted Homeschoolers Forum Online this fall.

My plan is that everyone involved will learn a bit about how websites are made, a lot about coding, and that we will all have a great deal of fun in the process.

I love website design. I have been creating sites since 1998, and have marveled at how quickly the technology has advanced. The prospect of sharing this enthusiasm and excitement for the digital frontier with engaged, interested, and motivated students is thrilling.

We will begin with the foundational concepts involved in web design—the structure of a site, the structure of a page, how to format elementscoding on a page, and how new technologies impact the behavior of a site. We will then move on to actually coding a small website. I will secure hosting for all students, so that they can share their creations with family and friends.  Students will not have to purchase software, as I will use open-source, cross-platform software for development. Online resources will be available for reference, and any texts or other supplemental materials will be available for free online use as well.

Besides my 16 years of web design experience, I also have over 15 years of experience teaching the concepts of web design to several different audiences. Most recently, I have served as an adjunct instructor at a local college in the Web Technologies program.

I live in Western North Carolina with my husband and soon-to-be 15-year-old daughter.  My interests include science fiction, boycodingmartial arts, track and field, reading, riding my bike, and having a great time with friends and family.
